Appraisal Theory with Tom Kirkman

This time, we will go through him using Appraisal Theory. According to Chapter 11, emotions do not stem from an event itself, but from an individual’s appraisal of what that event means for me and my goals. So, based on this theory, we can understand how his emotional reactions were not random bursts, but a result of extreme circumstances, his presidential journey. First, I want to talk about ‘ Fear ’. Fear arises when we perceive that our coping abilities cannot match current and future demands. I chose Tom because his life changes almost overnight. At the beginning of the story, he is just focused on what he’s doing as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and also taking care of his family. Then, after a catastrophic attack on the Capitol, he suddenly becomes the President of the United States.  Before becoming president, Tom seems to have a relatively stable life. He is a husband and a father, and he really loves his family. He also cares about his work and wants to commit his abilities to his position for the country.
